Steering Team Selects Interim Leadership
June 2, 2010: As part of the evolution of the formation of the Medical District, the Steering Team members appointed two members of the 7 member team to be Co-Chairs of the interim formation team. The Steering Team, an interim governance body providing leadership to advance the creation of the district, will ultimately be replaced by a SSMID board of property owners appointed by the Mayor at the time the District is officially created by City Council.
Richard Pankey, Riley's Cafe, representing small service businesses in the proposed district, and Ted Townsend, St Luke's Hospital, are the Co-Chairs of the Steering Team.
Urban Design Team Selected For Refining Medical District Vision Plan
May 25, 2010: An urban design team composed of Anderson-Bogert Engineers & Surveyors Inc, of Cedar Rapids and Sasaki Associates, Inc. of Boston, MA has been awarded the contract to provide urban planning and engineering services to assist in the development of the Medical District vision plan. The engagement will confirm development and redevelopment principals for the proposed district and will provide preliminary design and estimates for alternative Medical District streetscape improvements.
The primary reason for engaging the planning and engineering team is to make sure that whatever vision and plans are adopted for the Medical District, they are truly the vision desired for our district. Not just accepting out of hand the original Sasaki work sponsored by the City of Cedar Rapids, post flood, as part of the Neighborhood Planning Process.
The work is anticipated to be completed over the next 15-18 weeks and will include opportunities for property owners in the proposed district to participate in the prioritization of formulated alternatives.
Mercy Medical Center and St. Luke's Hospital have agreed to underwrite the cost of the professional services.
The opportunities for property owner participation will be firmed up in the next few weeks and information about those meetings will be posted on this website as well as mailed to those owners who have previously expressed interest in participating.
